What is the Clarity Crate?
A year and a half ago, I helped a client pack up six or seven Clarity Crates. She wasn't ready to decide about these things, but she also didn't want clutter on her counters. We labeled each box with the date and stored them in the basement.
When I visited her home again for another project, the boxes were still there. They hadn't moved or been opened.
We eventually sat down together and went through the boxes. She let go of almost everything inside, keeping just one thing out of all six or seven boxes.
"Time was the real test," she told me. "I never actually looked back in the boxes."
I've thought about that ever since, because it's true for me too. When I come back to a box I've set aside, it's usually been there for a while. I never set a reminder to check it. I just find it naturally, often when I'm already in the mood to declutter and moving through the house.
When you pack a Clarity Crate, write today's date on it. This step matters because it shows how long something has been sitting. Often, just seeing that date is more convincing than anything else.
The real value of the Clarity Crate is that it gets the item off your counter, out of your daily decisions, and into a holding space.
You'll open it the next time you're in the mood to declutter. Maybe you'll notice it while in the basement for something else, or when you're doing a deeper clean and feel ready to make more decisions.
When that day comes, whether it's three months or eighteen months later, you open the box and realize something important. If you haven't thought about what's inside since you packed it, that's your answer. Time has already shown you.
Sometimes, like my client, you'll open the box and find one thing you still want to keep. That's okay. The goal isn't to empty the box completely, but to give yourself space to decide without pressure.
When you put something in the Clarity Crate,
Label the box with today's date and store it somewhere away from your daily routine.
You'll naturally come back to it if you've been working on decluttering your home.
When you come back to it, whether that's next season or next year, time gives you clarity. If you didn't miss something, you're probably ready to let it go. If you still want it after all that time, you can keep it.
Time is the real test.
